Der 1960 gebürtige Steirer studierte nach einer Ausbildung zum Landschaftsarchitekten Gesang an der Musikuniversität Wien bei Prof. Gerhard Kahry und Interpretation im Rahmen der Sommerakademie der Salzburger Festspiele bei KS Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Sein Weg führte den Tenor vom Stadttheater St. Pölten über das Opernhaus Graz und das Theater St. Gallen an die Volksoper Wien, wo er seit 2003 Ensemblemitglied ist.

Als einer der wenigen Opernsänger studierte Wolfgang Gratschmaier Schauspiel bei Georg Tabori im „Kreis“ am Schauspielhaus Wien. Die damals erworbenen Erfahrungen fließen heute nicht nur in seine sängerische Tätigkeit, sondern auch in seine Arbeit als Regisseur seiner Inszenierungen von „Tosca“, „I Pagliacci“, „Rienzi“ und „Die Fledermaus“ „Die lustige Witwe“, „Im weissen Rössl“, um nur einige zu nennen, ein. Er ist der Begründer des „Theatergartens“ und der erste Regisseur, der immer mit einer absolut gleichberechtigten Co-Regisseurin an seinen atemberaubenden Inszenierungen arbeitet, unter anderem seit 2016 bei der mozartoper.wien der „Angelika-Prokopp-Sommerakademie der Wiener Philharmoniker“ mit Werken wie „Così fan tutte“ oder „Le nozze di Figaro“ und „Don Giovanni“.

Als Mitbegründer der freien Opernszene in Wien und erfahrener Konzert- und Theatermacher ist er seit 1989 in leitender Position des Produktionsvereines neueoper.at, seit 2015 Dozent für „Szenische Gestaltung“ an der MUK-Universität Wien und war von 2017 bis 2020 Intendant  von SCHLOSS THALHEIM CLASSIC. Gastspiele als Sänger und Regisseur führten ihn in den letzten 30 Jahren nach Berlin, Bad Hall, Fürth, Gstaad, Kufstein, München, Manila, Nürnberg, Prag, Seoul und Tokyo sowie seit 2006 in die USA und nach Canada. Video- und Plattenproduktionen sowie eine rege Konzerttätigkeit runden sein vielseitiges Schaffen ab.

Born in Styria in 1960, after training as a landscape architect, he studied singing at the Vienna University of Music with Prof. Gerhard Kahry and interpretation at the Salzburg Festival Summer Academy with KS Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. His path led the tenor from the Stadttheater St. Pölten via the Graz Opera House and the Theater St. Gallen to the Volksoper Wien, where he has been an ensemble member since 2003.

As one of the few opera singers, Wolfgang Gratschmaier studied acting with Georg Tabori in the "Kreis" at the Schauspielhaus Vienna. The experience he gained at that time flows today not only into his singing activities, but also into his work as a director of his productions of "Tosca", "I Pagliacci", "Rienzi" and "Die Fledermaus" "The Merry Widow", "Im weissen Rössl", to name but a few. He is the founder of the "Theatergarten" and the first director who always works with an absolutely equal co-director on his breathtaking productions, including since 2016 at the mozartoper.wien of the "Angelika-Prokopp-Sommerakademie der Wiener Philharmoniker" with works such as "Così fan tutte" or "Le nozze di Figaro" and "Don Giovanni".

As a co-founder of the independent opera scene in Vienna and an experienced concert and theater producer, he has been in a leading position of the production association neueoper.at since 1989, has been a lecturer for "Szenische Gestaltung" at the MUK University Vienna since 2015 and was the artistic director of SCHLOSS THALHEIM CLASSIC from 2017 to 2020. Guest performances as a singer and director have taken him to Berlin, Bad Hall, Fürth, Gstaad, Kufstein, Munich, Manila, Nuremberg, Prague, Seoul and Tokyo in the last 30 years, as well as to the USA and Canada since 2006. Video and record productions as well as a busy concert schedule round off his versatile oeuvre.
